Season Stats
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State women's tennis team looks to continue its impressive run of regional dominance this weekend, as it heads to Lawrence, Kan., to compete at the ITA Central Region Championships. The event begins Thursday and runs through Sunday.
Â
The Cowgirls have had four-straight seasons with at least one regional champion at the tournament. That includes two seasons of sweeps, with the Pokes taking home both singles and doubles titles in 2014 and 2015.
Â
Last season, Vladica Babic and Carla Tur Mari took home the regional doubles crown, winning six matches against the region's best to take home the hardware. Matched up with Kansas' Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum and Nina Khmelnitckaia in the championship match, Babic and Tur Mari pulled away late in the first set to take the frame, 6-4. It was all Cowgirls in the second set, as the OSU tandem shut out the pair of Jayhawks, 6-0, to take the match.
Â
Tur Mari attempted to earn a regional singles title as well in 2016, knocking off No. 3 seed Anastasia Rychagova, 1-6, 7-6(4), 6-3, to advance into the finals where she would come up just short to Oklahoma's Lily Miyazaki.
Â
Now teamed up with Sofia Blanco, Babic will be returning to defend her doubles crown this weekend. The tandem, ranked No. 15 in the nation, is coming off a stellar showing at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, where Babic and Blanco knocked off two top-10 teams in No. 7 Hadley Berg and Paige Cline of South Carolina, and No. 1 Kate Fahey and Alex Najarian of Michigan.
Â
Katarina Stresnakova and Marina Guinart will also compete in doubles for the Cowgirls this weekend. All four Pokes will compete in singles.
