Cowgirl Golf Debuts At No. 9 In Golfweek Preseason Rankings
September 06, 2016 | Cowgirl Golf
STILLWATER – The Golfweek national preseason rankings have been released, and the Oklahoma State women's golf team will start the 2016-17 campaign in the same place they ended 2015-16 – at No. 9.
The Cowgirls return their entire squad from last season's Big 12 title team, which advanced to the final round of stroke play at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Oklahoma State led the nation with 563 total birdies last season, and Linnea Johansson was a major reason why. No player in the NCAA had more birdies than Johansson, who posted 132 on the year and earned Women's Golf Coaches Association All-America honors. Her 2015-16 stroke average of 72.74 is the second best in program history.
Kenzie Neisen is back for her junior season after winning a second straight Big 12 individual championship in April. Neisen was also a First Team Academic All-Big 12 selection to go with her 73.26 stroke average.
Chih-Min Chen was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year and a WGCA All-American Scholar last year. The U.S. Open participant posted a 73.59 stroke average, which is the second best ever by an OSU freshman.
The Cowgirls will open play next week at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. OSU finished fourth at this event last season, which featured eight top-30 squads.
