Scaglia Shines As Cowboy Tennis Concludes Play In Napa
September 11, 2016 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State freshman Mathieu Scaglia won his third consecutive match to begin his career as the Cowboys concluded play at the Silverado Invitational on Sunday.
A back-and-forth first set between Scaglia and Buffalo's Filip Grbic ultimately saw Scaglia prevail as he was able to win a deciding tiebreak. Scaglia was able to settle in from there and control the match as the Frejus, France native was able to lock up the straight-set win and defeat Grbic, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
"I am really happy to win every singles match this weekend because it helped the team," Scaglia said. "During this tournament, I didn't play too well but also not too bad; I was just focusing on giving my best during all matches. We're happy with this tournament as a team, but we will try to be even better for the next one."
Nathan Roper was the only other Cowboy to compete on Sunday as Jurence Mendoza and Tristan Meraut both did not compete. Roper, a native of Edmond, Oklahoma, wrapped up the weekend with a tough loss to Ethan Nittolo of Buffalo, 7-5, 6-3.
In total, the Cowboys collected five team wins from the first event of their fall season. Next up will be another road trip, this time to Lafayette, Louisiana, where the Cowboys will once again compete in the Cajun Classic, which begins on Sept. 22.
The Cowboys have found success in the Cajun Classic in recent years, including two seasons ago when Arjun Kadhe placed second in the event.
