August 20, 2016 | Cowgirl Golf
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brasil – Former Oklahoma State women's golfers Caroline Masson and Pernilla Lindberg helped mark the return of golf to the Olympic games for the first time in 112 years.
Masson and Lindberg were Cowgirl teammates on the 2009 Big 12 championship squad, but have been competitors on the LPGA Tour since 2010. This week at the Olympic Course in Rio de Janeiro, they competed in the first Olympic golf competition since 1904, and notched 21st and 31st place finishes, respectively.
Masson carded 69 in the opening two rounds, which had her in a tie for 17th place and just six strokes back. She posted a 75 in round three, but rebounded nicely on Saturday with another 69.
She is currently ranked No. 84 in the world and has 10 career top-10 finishes on the LPGA Tour. The Gladbeck, Germany, native was a 2009 NGCA All-American for OSU with a 73.91 stroke average in her lone season at Karsten Creek.
Originally from Bollnäs, Sweden, Lindberg is a three-time NGCA All-American, including a pair of first-team nods, and a four-time NGCA All-American Scholar. The 2008 Big 12 Player of the Year turned pro in 2010, and is currently ranked No. 91 in the world thanks to five professional top-10 finishes.
Lindberg finished out the week with rounds of 69 and 70 to pull herself into a tie for 31st place.
