July 19, 2016 | Cowgirl Golf
STILLWATER – Golf is returning to the Olympics for the first time in 112 years, and a couple of teammates from the 2009 Oklahoma State women's golf team will be a part of the field.
Cowgirls Caroline Masson (Germany) and Pernilla Lindberg (Sweden) are headed to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to mark the return of the sport to the Olympics. Golf was last played in the Olympics at the 1904 St. Louis games.
The event will be contested August 17-20 and will consist of 72 holes of stroke play at the Reserva de Marapendi Golf Course. Between the men's and women's fields, 41 different countries will have at least one athlete competing for Olympic gold.
Masson is currently ranked No. 84 in the world and has 10 career top-10 finishes on the LPGA Tour. The Gladbeck, Germany, native was a 2009 NGCA All-American for OSU with a 73.91 stroke average in her lone season at Karsten Creek.
Originally from Bollnäs, Sweden, Lindberg is a three-time NGCA All-American, including a pair of first-team nods, and a four-time NGCA All-American Scholar. The 2008 Big 12 Player of the Year turned pro in 2010, and is currently ranked No. 91 in the world thanks to five professional top-10 finishes.
