Game Notes
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State softball gets to honor five of its own on Friday against Oklahoma at Cowgirl Stadium.
The Cowgirls will hold their Senior Night ceremonies to honor the five Oklahoma State seniors before they take on the Sooners. First pitch on is set for 6 p.m. and can be seen on Fox Sports Plus. The two teams will finish the three-game series on Saturday in Norman at 2 p.m. on Fox Sports Oklahoma.
"It's definitely going to be special," senior Tiffany Mikkelson said. "It's a night I've been looking forward to for a while. But it's also kind of bittersweet because I've been waiting for it but I also don't want it to happen because it will be the last time I play on this field. So it's pretty special."
Oklahoma State will honor five seniors this year. Mikkelson, Shianne Hughes, Michaela Patton, Dre McKee and Kacy Freeze. Together, the group has combined to help the Cowgirls to 106 wins up to this point.
Although he has only been with them for a year, Coach Kenny Gajewski said he could tell how special this senior class has been.
"I've learned how resilient, how mentally tough (they are)," he said. "I've learned how good of people these kids are. That's the one thing that we've talked about here. The one thing that we can do is be great people and being great ambassadors of OSU. They've done that. They've made me so proud to be their coach. I know they didn't pick me to be their head coach but we've done everything we could as a coaching staff to embrace them and I feel like they know that. It's going to be an awesome day."
On the field, the Cowgirls will take a season best seven-game winning streak into the games against the Sooners.
During the stretch that dates back to a 4-1 win against Arkansas on April 27 in Stillwater, the Cowgirls have outscored opponents 49-21 while outhitting them 67-39. The pitchers have performed admirably as well, holding teams to five or less hits four times while posting an impressive 2.89 ERA.
Oklahoma State has been led by sophomore Vanessa Shippy, who is batting .619 on 13 hits with five RBIs with three steals.
The Cowgirls will look to even the season at 1-1 on Friday after Oklahoma took the first game in Oklahoma City, 10-2, on Mar. 30.
"Bedlam is always fun," senior Michaela Patton said. "But (Gajewski) really teaches us that it's another game. We don't really care who is in the other dugout. Honestly we're just trying to be our best team. We know what it takes for us to have a good game and that our main focus."
