Lynch Moves Closer To Historic Mark In Loss To Texas Tech
April 03, 2016 | Cowgirl Softball
Â
Lynch now has the second-longest streak in program history, second only to Shanel Scott. Scott produced a 17-game hit streak in 2005.Â
Â
"I try really hard not to think about it," Lynch said. "Really, it's just kind of there. If keeps going, it keeps going. If it doesn't, it doesn't. Hopefully we just get a win out of it. No matter if I do good or bad, I just want the team to win."
Â
Oklahoma State led until the final inning, but Texas Tech completed its comeback effort with three runs the final three innings of regulation before the eventual walk off hit in the bottom of the eighth to get the victory. Â
Â
As it had the previous two games of the series, Oklahoma State (17-15 overall, 0-4 Big 12) started as well as it could have. Vanessa Shippy drew a walk to start the game, and one batter later Taylor Lynch brought her home with a home run over the left field fence to give the Cowgirls a 2-0 after the first inning.
Â
After a scoreless second inning for both teams, the Cowgirls got back to their scoring ways in the top of the third. Madi Sue Montgomery, Jessie Haffner and Darcy Taylor came through with RBI hits to help the Cowgirls score four in the inning, and give them a 6-0 lead.
"Just a good mentality from the hiters," Coach Kenny Gajewski said. "They've come ready to play and unfortunately we haven't been able to do enough to finish these games off."
Â
Shippy started the top of the fourth with a solo home run over the centerfield fence to give Oklahoma State a 7-0 lead before Texas Tech scored four in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 7-4.
Â
Texas Tech scored two more in the bottom of the fifth before Brandi Needham came in for Kacy Freeze. With bases loaded and two outs, Needham struck out the first batter she faced to get the Cowgirls out of the inning.
Â
The Red Raiders scored two more in the bottom half of the fifth, and one more in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings.
Â
Shippy led the way at the plate for Oklahoma State. She finished two-for-four with one RBI, and two runs scored.
Â
Following the loss, Oklahoma State will look to rebound next week as conference play continues on the weekend.
Â
"We just have to get back home and get a day off (on Monday) and clear our minds," Gajewski said. "We've obviously dug ourselves a pretty good hole in conference. Not an insurmountable hole but we have ourselves in a hole to start. We just have to get the momentum back that we had. Going into this week, it's tough. This is a tough deal, and these kids are hurting. We just have to find ourselves and figure out where to go from here and that's on me."
