Track and Field Finishes Big Weekend in Fayetteville
April 23, 2016 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Oklahoma State track and field team wrapped up the weekend competition Saturday at the John McDonnell Invitational with good marks from several athletes.
Anna Boyert finished third in the 1,500-meter run in 4:20.11, topping her personal best by three seconds and jumping to fourth in the Big 12 to give the Cowgirls the four best times in the conference and keep six Cowgirls in the top-10.
"Anna ran a really good race," men's middle-distance coach Bobby Lockhart said. "She ran really aggressive, made all the appropriate moves, but just came up a little short at the end. She PR'd by three seconds, though, so it was a great day for her overall."
Freshman Baylor Nelson finished fifth in the hammer throw with her personal best heave of 43.18m/41-8.
"We had a lot of second-bests or near bests this weekend, but Baylor's throw was a pretty good personal best for her," throws coach Lucais Mackay said. "She topped herself by about two meters, so it was nice to see."
Tyler Jackson had a busy day on the track for the Cowboys.
He opened the day in the 4X100-meter relay then ran a 47.56 in the 400-meter run, which was a season's best and good enough for sixth.
"Tyler put together three very nice runs with his open 400, 200 and relay leg," sprints coach Diego Flaquer said. "We had some solid performances today and his definitely stood out."
Jackson also finished 13th in the 200 with another season's best of 21.34.
All-American John Teeters opened his season at the John McDonnell Invitational in the 100, placing third in the event with a time of 10.16. His debut time is the third best time in the conference and the fifth fastest time in the West Region.
Also in the 100 was Arlando Brewer-Johnson who topped his personal best by five-hundredths of a second. He finished 13th overall.
Luis Martinez ran in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the first time in his Cowboy career and won the race in 9:17.39.
"He was just supposed to just go 2,000," Lockhart said. "We made the decision halfway through to keep going. He's got a lot to learn, but his water jumps were phenomenal and he beat Anthoney Armstrong who's an all-conference guy."
In the men's 1,500-meter run, Brigham Hedges finished sixth with a 3:46.26.
"Brigham's race had a rabbit and so we knew it was going to be a hot race," Lockhart said. "His time might not be a qualifier, but he's now a legitimate contender at the conference level. He took a big step in the right direction.
The Penn Relays are up next for the Pokes, where the Cowboys and Cowgirls are expected to run both All-American distance medley relay teams.
