STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State women's basketball team ran its non-conference home winning streak to 54 with a 71-51 victory over Georgia in front of 2,497 fans inside Gallagher-Iba Arena on Saturday.
Â
The victory pushes the Cowgirls to 7-0 this season and marks the fifth time that OSU has won its first seven games of the year during head coach Jim Littell's tenure.
Â
The Cowgirls stormed out of the gates as they drained their first three 3-pointers as part of a 9-0 run that saw OSU jump out to a 14-4 lead over the Lady Bulldogs. Kaylee Jensen and Karli Wheeler added two more 3-pointers late in the opening quarter as OSU opened up a 25-12 lead after one period of play.
Â
OSU's early run of offense was fueled by some stifling defense as the Cowgirls held UGA scoreless during two separate three-minute stretches in the first quarter. The Cowgirls were also able to dominate on the glass as they grabbed the first eight rebounds of the contest.
Â
In the second quarter, the two teams began to exchange baskets, but Wheeler drained her second 3-pointer from the top of the key which Jensen followed with a tough layup on OSU's next trip down the court to push the Cowgirls' lead to 17.
Â
OSU's six first-half 3-pointers is the most in a single half for the Cowgirls since they made six against Oklahoma on January 16 last season. The squad poured in two more buckets from behind the arc in the second half to finish the game with a season-high eight 3-pointers.
Â
In the third quarter, Jensen and Wheeler continued to match one another as the Cowgirls opened the second half. Working in the low post, Jensen found the bottom of the net with a layup to reach double digits in the contest, but not to be outdone, Wheeler sunk her third, and the Cowgirls' seventh, 3-pointer of the night on the ensuing possession.
Â
Jensen capped off a quick 7-0 run for the Cowgirls shortly after Wheeler's three as she sunk a 13-foot jumper to push the OSU lead to 25 – its largest lead of the night. The junior finished the contest with her 14th career double-double as she tallied 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting and brought down 17 rebounds in the contest.
Â
Wheeler and Mandy Coleman also chipped in with double-digit scoring performances as the pair finished with 12 and 16 points, respectively. Most of Coleman's scoring came from a great night at the free-throw line, where the Stockton, California native made seven of her eight attempts on Saturday.
Â
Anchored by Coleman and Jensen, the Cowgirls once again controlled the low block as they outscored UGA 30-22 in the paint. OSU has recorded at least 20 points in the paint in all seven of their wins this season outscored their opponents on all but one of those occasions.
Â
With the game sealed away late in the fourth quarter, Shakilla Small capped off OSU's impressive shooting display from behind the arc as she banked in a 3-pointer to record her first points as a Cowgirl and seal the 71-51 victory.
Â
The Cowgirls will return to action on December 11 when they square off with UT-Rio Grande Valley at 1:00 p.m. inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
