OSU Game Notes
STILLWATER, Okla. - The Brad Underwood era at Oklahoma State officially tips off against Campbell on Friday, Nov. 11. The first three years of Underwood's coaching career led to an 89-14 record and a pair of NCAA Tournament victories at Stephen F. Austin, and he looks to bring that type of success to Stillwater.
The Cowboys return to full strength after a season of injury woes in 2015-16. The biggest of those injuries occurred to All-Big 12 shooting guard Phil Forte (elbow), who missed 29 games, and Big 12 Freshman of the Year Jawun Evans (shoulder), who missed the final 10 games. The 11 OSU players that saw at least 10 minutes per game last season combined to miss a total of 55 games due to injury.
Evans took the Big 12 by storm last season, and was a staple in the league's 2016-17 preseason awards and national watch lists. He was one of 20 named to the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award watch list, and was one of five on the Preseason All-Big 12 First Team. He led all Big 12 freshmen in scoring (12.9 PPG), assists (4.9 apg), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.9 A/TO), field goal percentage (47.1), 3-point field goal percentage (47.5) and free throw percentage (83.3). In the six games prior to his injury, Evans averaged 19.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game - all team highs. Cowboy fans will always remember Evans' 42-point performance in the Bedlam game against Oklahoma in Stillwater, which are the most points ever scored by any player in the rivalry.
Campbell was tabbed to finish eighth in the Big South in the league's annual preseason poll after a 12-18 season in 2015-16. The Camels return 10 lettermen and three starters, including Big South Freshman of the Year, Chris Clemons. Winthrop was the unanimous choice to win the Big South in 2016-17.
Chris Clemons took the Big South by storm last season. He was named the conference's Freshman of the Year and was a '16-17 Big South Preseason All-Conference First Team selection. The 5-9 native of Raleigh, North Carolina reached double figures in 29 of his 30 games, including a trio of 30-point games. He averaged 18.5 points per game, which made him the country's seventh highest scoring freshman.
