STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State women's basketball team ran its non-conference home winning streak to 53 as the Cowgirls knocked off Rice, 65-51, in front of 2,050 fans inside Gallagher-Iba Arena on Saturday.
The win improves OSU to 6-0 this season, while Rice dipped to 3-2.
The first half saw both team's struggle to find a rhythm offensively, but the Cowgirls were able to successfully move the ball around as they recorded assists on eight of their 10 first-half buckets. OSU's two seniors, Diana Omozee and Katelyn Loecker, were the driving forces behind the Cowgirls' passing display as they each dished out three assists in the game's first 20 minutes of action.
Loecker also found success as a scorer on Saturday as she drained a 3-pointer from the right wing with eight seconds left in the first half to put OSU back on top, 26-24, heading into the break. The senior logged another impressive all-around display in the first half as she finished the first 20 minutes with seven points, two rebounds and three assists.
As the second half got underway, OSU's defense continued to impress as the Cowgirls held Rice scoreless for the first five minutes of the third quarter. Kaylee Jensen helped anchor the Cowgirls on offense as she tallied her third double-double of the season, scoring 12 points and bringing down 11 rebounds.
Jensen's also helped the Cowgirls continue to dominate down low as OSU outrebounded Rice, 42-26, and outscored their opponents in the paint, 26-10. The Cowgirls have now outscored their opponents in the paint on five occasions this season.
Despite the success in the paint, the Cowgirls found themselves in a tight contest midway through the third quarter.
From there though, Omozee continued to impact the game as she drained a 3-pointer from the right wing which she followed up with a tough layup on the ensuing possession. Omozee's five-point outburst helped her reach double digits for the fourth consecutive game. The senior finished with 12 points, matching her career high that she previously on Wednesday against Northern Iowa.
In the fourth quarter the two teams continued to trade baskets with one another. And with under a minute remaining, Karli Wheeler drained a 3-pointer from the corner to give the Cowgirls a 13-point lead. Wheeler's second 3-pointer of the game was enough to put help OSU secure the win over Rice, 65-51.
The Cowgirls will continue their four-game homestand next Saturday when OSU squares off with Georgia. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
