Cowboys Complete Sweep of Outlaw Open

YUKON, Okla. – The Oklahoma State wrestling team had a strong Sunday at the Outlaw Open, sweeping the tournament after 10 Cowboys picked up titles and 23 Cowboys placed in their respective divisions.

Redshirt freshman Nick Piccininni and redshirt junior Eli Hale finished first and second at 125 pounds, respectively. Piccininni picked up a pair of major decisions on his way to a 4-0 mark on the day. The East Setauket, N.Y., native would defeat Hale in the finals by way of a 3-2 decision. Hale picked up a couple of bonus point victories in his run to the finals as well, earning a 10-1 major decision over Central Oklahoma's Garrett Rowe and a 16-1 tech fall over Oklahoma's Clay Vincent in his first two rounds.

With redshirt freshman Kaid Brock taking the crown, the Cowboys took the top four spots in the 133-pound open division. Brock opened his day with a 15-3 major decision over Central Oklahoma's Rio Zamora before recording a second-period fall over teammate Lincoln Lemon in the quarterfinals. Brock would go on to tally an 11-4 win over Cowboy senior Kyle Garcia in the finals. Redshirt freshman Lincoln Olson pinned unattached sophomore Mike Magaldo in the consolation finals to take third place.

Top-ranked Dean Heil took care of business in the 141-pound division, going 4-0 in a round robin format to take the title. With a pair of tech falls and a major decision, three of Heil's four wins were bonus-point victories. He would hold off redshirt freshman Tristan Moran in a 5-2 match to complete his sweep of the division. Moran finished second, going 3-1 overall on the day.

Wrestling unattached, Geordan Martinez recorded a trio of wins Sunday to take the 149-pound bracket. Martinez opened with a 12-1 major over Central Oklahoma's Briar Stopp in the quarterfinals before an 18-3 tech fall of Oklahoma City's Gavin Millhouse in the semis. Martinez finished off the day against Central Oklahoma's Will Stelzlen, earning a 7-3 decision. After falling in the quarterfinals, Jonce Blaylock streaked through the consolation bracket with a third-period fall and a couple of tech falls to take third in the division.

The Cowboys took first and second spots at 157 pounds, with junior Davey Dolan earning the title and freshman Wyatt Sheets, competing unattached, taking second. Dolan picked up a 16-1 tech fall over Central Oklahoma's Jared McKinstry before posting a 3-0 win over Justin Thomas of Oklahoma and finally holding off Sheets in a 7-2 decision in the finals.

Both redshirt sophomores Chandler Rogers and Hestin Lamons placed in the 165-pound bracket, with Rogers coming out in the top spot and Lamons finishing fourth. Rogers started off strong, coming out and pinning Oklahoma City's Zaine Jackson in 38 seconds. Rogers would go on to add an 11-3 decision over Oklahoma's Jeremy Thomas before upending Sooner Yoanse Mejias in the finals.

Unattached junior Jacobe Smith picked up his second open tournament victory of the season, earning two of his four wins by fall to take the 174-pound title. Senior Jordan Rogers was injured in his first match of the day and was forced to withdraw.

Nolan Boyd was the victor of the 184-pound division, while three other Cowboys placed as well. Boyd stormed through the bracket, posting a pair of tech falls in the quarterfinals and semifinals to reach the finals where he was matched up with teammate Andrew Marsden, who competed unattached. Boyd would come out on top, pinning Marsden just over two minutes into the first period. In his first collegiate action, unattached freshman Keegan Moore finished fourth after pinning Central Oklahoma's Walker Smith in the consolation semis and coming up short to Caleb Hawes of Central Oklahoma in a 5-3 decision.

Redshirt sophomores Preston Weigel and Derek White (unattached) finished first and second, respectively at 197 pounds. Weigel recorded a couple of bonus-point victories in his opening two matches, including a 16-1 tech fall over Oklahoma City's Evan Hudson. White recorded a major decision and a tech fall of his own on his way to the finals, where Weigel would grab the narrow 1-0 win.

Senior Austin Schafer was victorious at 285 with three bonus-point victories to take the title. Schafer tallied two 16-0 tech falls in the quarterfinals and finals, and a 9-1 major decision over Cowboy Blake Andrews in the semis. Andrews would finish third after a 6-3 decision over Oklahoma City's Korey Walker in the consolation finals. Also of note, unattached freshman Ethan Andersen recorded a first-period fall in his first collegiate match, pinning Nathan Martin of Oklahoma in 51 seconds.
