Next Day Minute: Newberry Loses Mask, Posts Career Performance
January 03, 2016 | Cowboy Basketball
STILLWATER – Senior guard Jeff Newberry had been playing in a protective mask to shield his cracked orbital bone for the last four games, and hated every minute of it.
Aside from impeding his vision, the mask was hot and he constantly had to take it off and wipe the sweat out of his eyes.
Newberry couldn't wait to take the court without the mask, and he proved that against TCU in the Big 12 opener on Saturday afternoon. The senior tallied a career-high tying 23 points and a game-high eight rebounds in helping the Cowboys take down the Horned Frogs, 69-48.
More importantly than his scoring, Newberry helped set the tone on the defensive side of the ball. OSU held TCU to just 48 points, and hasn't allowed either of its last two opponents to reach 50 points or score 25 points in a half.
Hear from the Cowboy guard on how good it felt to win, and win without the mask, and about one of biggest plays of the year to this point – OSU's around-the-world 3-pointer that sent the arena into a frenzy and forced a TCU timeout.
