Cowboys Shut Out Shockers on Senior Day
April 07, 2015 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER -- The No. 25 Oklahoma State men's tennis squad rounded out the regular home season with a 4-0 victory over No. 57 Wichita State on senior night at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center on Tuesday.
"It was a good match all around," coach Jay Udwadia said. "It was nice to start by winning the doubles point. We played some good doubles and persevered at the end. It was a good match to get under our belt leading into the weekend. It was great to see Nico (Ferrigno) clinch the match for us on senior day. We're competing well right now, and we look forward to working hard and getting after it this weekend."
What started as a tough doubles matchup was soon dominated by the Cowboys. On court one, No. 26 Jakob Sude and Arjun Kadhe controlled the entire match and put away the Ostojic and Cuic duo, 6-2.
Lucas Gerch and Nicolai Ferrigno, competing on court three, fell behind early to a 3-0 deficit. The Cowboy duo stormed back and only gave up one more game before taking a 6-4 win over Herzan and Devilliers.
The doubles victory was the Cowboys' 11th of the season.
In singles, the Cowboys put it away, winning on courts four, three and five, respectively.
Lukas Finzelberg brought the Cowboy lead to 2-0, picking up a win on court four. The redshirt freshman gave up only four games on the day, defeating Miroslav Herzan, 6-3, 6-1. Finzleberg improves to 8-5 on the spring.
Giving the Cowboys a comfortable 3-0 lead was sophomore and 118th-ranked Arjun Kadhe, who also surrendered just four games. Playing at the No. 3-spot, Kadhe went back and forth with Guillermo de Vilchez in the first set, but the Cowboy grabbed a 6-4 win. He then went on to shutout the Shocker in the second set, 6-0.
Senior Nicolai Ferrigno sealed the win for the Pokes in his final regular season match at the Greenwood Tennis Center with a straight-set victory on court five. Ferrigno won the first set quickly, putting up a 6-2 victory. The Cowboy went to a tight second set that led to a tiebreaker. Even there, the competition was close, but Ferrigno pulled ahead and got the 7-6(4) victory.
"I got pretty emotional today. I don't know how much it showed," Ferrigno said. "It's hard to believe that it's already senior day. Being honored before the match--I just can't show enough appreciation for that. Of course, being able to clinch the match just topped it off."
Play on courts one, two and six was not finished.
The Cowboys will be on the road this weekend, travelling to No. 23 Texas Tech on Friday and No. 2 Baylor on Sunday.
