Last Time Out: Husker Invite
The Oklahoma State track and field team wrapped up its competition at the Sevigne Husker Invitational with three of its four athletes finishing in the top four of their respective events.
Craig Nowak continued his improvement as he set his career best in the one mile run for the second straight week. He finished in fourth with a time of 4:05.19. That time also gave him the fourth best time in the Big 12 this season. OSU now holds two of the top five times in the conference with Nowak's time and Vegard Oelstad's 4:01.55 he recorded at last weekend's Razorback Invitational.
Monika Juodeskaite and Caileigh Glenn represented OSU well by finishing second and third, respectively, in the women's one mile run. Juodeskaite's time of 4:46.71 is the second best time in the Big 12 this season.
Glenn finished one place behind her in 4:50.37, nearly 20 seconds better than her season debut time that she recorded at the Razorback Invitational.
In the men's shot put competition, Itamar Levi improved one spot from last year's Husker Invitational with a seventh place finish, throwing 17.57 meters (57-7.75).
Nick Miller also competed in the weight throw Friday night, finishing second with a throw of 21.86 meters (71-08.75).
As a team, the OSU men finished eighth overall, and the women finished 10th.
A Look Back
Last year, Viktoriia Sadokhina won the women's triple jump to lead the OSU athletes competing at the Husky Classic, in Seattle, Wash. Sadokhina's jump, a mark of 12.86m/42-2.25, was the No. 2 triple jump in OSU history. Monika Juodeskaite took eighth in the 3,000 meter invite, running a blistering 9:17.37. In the 800 meters, Kaela Edwards ran another great race, finishing in 2:05.66. Clara Nichols ran a 2:06.60 to finish 12th. Chad Noelle ran a sub-four minute mile to lead the OSU men at the Iowa State Classic, in Ames, Iowa. At day two of the Tyson Invitational, in Fayetteville, Ark., Brian Gohlke won the 3,000 meters, with a time of 8:11.60.
Men and Women in Top 20
The Oklahoma State men's and women's track and field teams each dropped one spot in this week's United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national team rankings, which were released on Monday. The men's team settled in at No. 17, while the women moved to No. 15, keeping both teams in the top 20 for the third-consecutive week.
The Fastest Man In The Country
On Jan. 16, Cowboy sprinter John Teeters provided one of the most electrifying performances of the season, as the sophomore ran a 6.54 in the 60 meter dash at the Holiday Inn Invitational, giving him the NCAA's number one mark and a new school record. A look at how Teeters' time stacks up with the rest of the NCAA this season:
1. John Teeters Oklahoma State 6.54 1/16/15
1. Trayvon Bromell Baylor 6.54 1/23/15
3. Jalen Miller Mississippi 6.55 1/30/15
4. Christian Coleman Tennessee 6.58 2/6/15
5. Ronnie Baker TCU 6.58cA 1/31/15
5. Tevin Hester Clemson 6.60 1/30/15
To put Teeters' time into perspective, his 6.54 would have earned second-place honors at last season's NCAA Indoor Championships, won by Florida State's Dentarius Locke (6.52). Teeters' performance was also only .02 seconds away from landing a spot on the collegiate all-time top 10.
A Rising Star
On Jan. 10, Oklahoma State cross country standout Cerake Geberkidane finished second in the men's junior race at the Great Edinburgh International Cross Country Meet, helping team USA win its first overall team title at the event. Geberkidane, a freshman in his first season of collegiate competition, completed the 6K course in 20:07, besting several of the world's elite junior athletes.
The Denver, Colo., native followed that performance on Feb. 7 with a runner-up finish in the junior race at the 2015 USA Cross Country Championships. He finished the 8K course in 25:37 and is now qualified to represent the United States at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in China March 28.
Miller Smashes Meet Record
Oklahoma State's season-opening appearance at the K-State Winter Invitational was highlighted by one of the Cowboys' most decorated talents; senior Nick Miller. Miller took first in the weight throw with a toss of 22.56m/74-0.25, breaking the previous meet record (21.44m/70-04.25m - Jason Gervais, Wyoming, 1999) by almost four feet.
Rewriting The Record Books
At Oklahoma State's season-opening meet on Dec. 13, the Cowboys and Cowgirls saw success in a wide range of events, earning seven first-place finishes. Even more impressively, eight different members from the two OSU squads entered their names into the school record books.
True freshman Arlando Brewer-Johnson completed the 60 meter dash in 6.91 seconds, giving him the fourth-fastest mark in school history. He also navigated his way to No. 9 on OSU's all-time list of long jump performances, leaping a first-place mark of 6.81m/22-4.25.
In his OSU debut, Richard Smith dominated the triple jump with a mark of 14.25/46-9.0, earning him the fifth-longest leap in Oklahoma State history.
After recording a throw of 17.47/57-3.25 at last season's Big 12 Championships, Itamar Levi improved his indoor best in the shot put with a mark of 17.72m/58-1.75, helping him stay at No. 4 in the record books. Levi also improved his indoor best in the weight throw (15.73m/51-7.25), keeping him at No. 2 on the all-time list.
Charles Kammiller, a sophomore from Derby, Kan., finished just behind Levi in the weight throw category with a mark of 15.48/50-9.5, helping him maintain the third-best toss in school history.
In her collegiate debut, Leah Milteer blazed her way into the record books by recording a time of 7.96 in the 60 meter dash, giving her the ninth-best time in OSU history.
On Jan. 24, junior thrower Chase Ealey broke the school women's shot put record with a 16.71m/54-10.0 throw that also won her the competition.
