From The Wing To The Paint, Hammonds Asked To Play Key Role

Â
STILLWATER -- Changing his style of play is nothing new for Leyton Hammonds.
Â
Hammonds, a native of North Richland Hills, Texas, played as a forward while at Richland Hill High School. When he came to Oklahoma State in 2013, Hammonds was asked to play a little more of a spot-shooter role for the Cowboys.
Â
This season, Hammonds is having to change his game once again as he becomes one of the key members of this year's team. With the departure of Le'Bryan Nash and Michael Cobbins after last season, everything is what the Cowboys will need from Hammonds, who will be asked to play both on the wing and in the low post at times this year. His versatility could be a key for the Cowboys.
Â
"Leyton Hammonds is one of those bright spots on our team," OSU head coach Travis Ford said. "He is a stat guy; he is a guy who can do a little bit of everything."
The ability to rebound, the quickness to grab a steal and the knowledge of the game to create shots, Hammonds is hoping to be just what the Cowboys need in their lineup.
Â
"I've had to change up my game, going back to a lot of what I learned in high school," Hammonds said. "I've been playing with my back to the basket, and working on facing up and going by all of our smaller guards to the bigger post players."
Â
"He's one of the more versatile players on our team," Ford said. "We need him to fill up the stat column. I've been very happy with him up to this point. He has really stood out."
Â
Along with changing his position, Hammonds will also take on a new role as he was named one of the team captains for the 2015-2016 season. Phil Forte and Jeff Newberry were also voted as team captains, making Hammonds the only junior of the three.
Â
Hammonds is no stranger to change, and as the 2015-2016 season inches closer to tip-off, he is ready to do whatever it takes to win.
Â
"Coach (Ford) felt it was necessary for me to play the forward position," Hammonds said. "And I told him that I would be willing to do that."
