Cowgirls Advance to Final of Dick Vitale Classic

STILLWATER—Oklahoma State women's tennis advanced to the finals of the Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic on Saturday.
Cowgirl duo of Vladica Babic and Carla Tur Mari advanced to the doubles final after defeating Spencer Liang and Peggy Porter of Florida, 8-4.
Babic and Tur Mari had not competed together in doubles during the fall season before this tournament, but managed to knock off the Gator tandem, who came into the match ranked No. 55 nationally.
"Vladica and Carla have had a great weekend battling through the heat and playing so many matches against quality opponents," coach Chris Young said. "This is the second year in a row for Vladica to play in the doubles final and I know she wants to bring home the trophy this year."
Babic also earned a spot in the singles final with a victory on Saturday. The sophomore took down Katrine Steffensen of Princeton in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Tur Mari was one win away from making the singles final an all-Cowgirl affair. The junior fell to Liang (UF), 6-3, 6-0.
At the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in New York, Maria Alvarez and Kelsey Laurente wrapped up their fall season play in the consolation draw.
The senior pairing took on Miho Kowase and Anna Sanford of Ohio State in the semifinals. The Cowgirl duo fell to the Buckeyes, 6-4, 6-3.
Alvarez and Laurente have made impressed throughout the fall, winning the USTA/ITA Central Regional, which led to an automatic berth in the National Indoor tournament.
"They are two great seniors, who have set themselves up for a great finish."
Alvarez and Laurente have won eight of their last 10 doubles matches.
"Maria and Kelsey have improved so much this fall," Young said. "They have become one of the better doubles teams in the country."
