Cowgirls Earn Draw Against Texas Tech
October 02, 2015 | Cowgirl Soccer
STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State battled No. 14 Texas Tech for 110 minutes Friday night at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex, but a winner could not be decided in the double overtime affair as the match ended in a 2-2 tie.
For OSU, the result gives the Cowgirls their first point in the Big 12 standings at 0-2-1, and they are now 5-6-1 overall. TTU leaves Stillwater with a 7-1-4 mark that includes an 0-0-2 showing in league play.
Friday's match was tightly contested and entertaining throughout. TTU owned a 27-20 advantage in shots, with three of the Red Raiders' attempts hitting the post, while OSU recorded 11 shots on goal. Both teams collected eight corner kicks.
The highly physical affair also saw the two teams combine for 42 fouls and four yellow cards.
Things started out with a flurry as Tech's Caity Heap blasted a shot off the post in the game's first minute, and just 30 seconds later, OSU's Marlo Zoller delivered a shot that Red Raider goalie Lauren Watson had to dive to save.
Watson continued to thwart OSU opportunities as she saved six of the Cowgirls' nine shots in the opening half, while Michela Ongaro countered with four first-half saves for the home team.
The Red Raiders were able to get on the scoreboard in the 35th minute, however, as All-American Janine Beckie booted a shot from 22-yards out that bent into the back of the net at the far post to give TTU a 1-0 lead.
OSU would face the one-goal deficit until the 62nd minute when the Cowgirls executed a score on a corner kick. Christina Jean-Charles delivered the kick into the box where Laurene Tresfield rose and headed it to the upper post for the equalizer.
Tresfield's second goal of the season tied the match at 1-1, but that score would not last long as just under four minutes later, TTU was whistled for a foul in the box. Allie Stephenson stepped up and buried the free attempt to put OSU on top.
The Cowgirls hung on to the 2-1 lead until the 88th minute when TTU would be awarded a penalty kick opportunity of its own following a foul at the top of the box.
Once again Beckie delivered as she sent the ball into the net for her fifth goal of the season and a 2-2 tie.
TTU outshot the Cowgirls by a 5-2 margin in the extra periods, and one of those attempts nearly spelled doom for OSU. But with just 63 seconds remaining, Ongaro notched the biggest of her five saves on the night as she dove to her left to deflect a close-range shot by Beckie.
OSU returns to action Sunday when the Cowgirls host Texas at 1 p.m.
