STILLWATER – Oklahoma State battled San Diego State to a 1-1 draw Thursday night at Neal Patterson Stadium.
The Cowgirls' season record now stands at 2-2-2, while the Aztecs go to 3-1-1.
Statistically, the match was also nearly identical, with SDSU owning a slim 14-12 advantage in shots. Four of the Aztecs' shots were on goal, while OSU put three on frame.
In her first start as a Cowgirl, fifth-year senior goalie Avery Bass recorded three saves and had a key punch out of a ball served into the box late in the contest.
OSU had an early chance to go on top in the 14th minute when Sonora DeFini drew a foul in the box. But DeFini's resulting penalty kick was saved by Kailey Carlen.
SDSU would get on the board first in the 17th minute when Naima Castro found the back of the net off an assist from Alexyz Nakamoto.
The rest of the half remained scoreless, and at halftime, SDSU held a 10-6 shot advantage over the Cowgirls.
The Aztecs held their lead for the first 30 minutes of the second half, but in the 75th minute, they were whistled for a foul on Jada Moorman at the top of the box. Addy Lang would step up and bury the penalty kick for the equalizer; the goal was the second of the season for Lang, both coming on PKs.
OSU came close to taking a lead in the 84th minute. Off a corner kick, Brenna Rowlett headed a shot off the crossbar that was deemed to not cross the line. On the ensuing scramble, Keaton Mitchell also had a shot attempt that was blocked.
With the clock winding down and just over two minutes remaining, SDSU was awarded a free kick from the near side from 30 yards out. The Aztecs sent a cross into the box that a leaping Bass was able to punch out of harm's way.
The Cowgirls return to action Sunday when they host Southeast Missouri State at 1 p.m.
