Cowgirls Tie Texas
October 04, 2015 | Cowgirl Soccer
STILLWATER, Okla. — For the second-straight match at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex, a winner could not be decided after 110 minutes and two overtime periods as Oklahoma State and Texas battled to a 0-0 draw Sunday afternoon.
The Cowgirls are now 5-6-2 on the season and 0-2-2 in Big 12 Conference play, while Texas is 4-3-4 and 1-1-1 in the league.
OSU dominated possession after intermission and created numerous chances but could not find the back of the net. The Cowgirls doubled up the visitors on shots, 22-11, including a 20-5 advantage in the second half and overtimes, but UT goalie Abby Smith collected six saves to help keep OSU off the scoreboard.
"The Texas Tech draw (Friday night) felt like a hard-fought game that we were able to manage to get a positive point in the Big 12 — this feels like a loss," said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. "Our second-half performance was great. You've got to give kudos to Abby Smith — best keeper in the country in my opinion and she showed it today, four or five brilliant saves. And in fairness we missed four or five chances as well so we have to take some responsibility.
"On another day, we score three or four and win that game quite handily. It's a little bit disappointing that we didn't get the win but can't fault the team, they played really well, especially in the second half."
In the opening 45 minutes, Texas was the aggressor with six shots to just two for the Cowgirls, but OSU goalie Michela Ongaro recorded three of her four saves before halftime.
Things changed dramatically after the break, and OSU was unlucky not to get on the board.
In the 63rd minute, Madison Mercado collected a great pass from Allie Stephenson and delivered a shot that Smith slid to knock away, and 30 seconds later, it was Stephenson who blasted a long shot that Smith was able to leap and tip over the crossbar.
With less than two minutes remaining in the match, OSU's Haley Woodard had a pair of chances from close range, with her first being blocked before she secured the rebound and sent a chance off the near post.
OSU outshot the Longhorns 6-3 in the extra time, but Smith tallied three more saves in the overtimes to seal the shutout.
The Cowgirls return to action Wednesday for a rare midweek match when they host Drake at 7 p.m.
