Cowgirls Back In Win Column
October 07, 2015 | Cowgirl Soccer
STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State snapped its four-match winless streak Wednesday night at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex with a 3-0 win over Drake.
Courtney Dike and Madison Mercado led the attack for the Cowgirls, who improved to 6-6-2 on the season. Dike recorded a pair of goals, while Mercado also found the back of the net and assisted on both Dike scores.
OSU finished with a 22-9 advantage in shots, while also holding a 12-2 edge in corner kicks. Michela Ongaro and Ashton Hierholzer combined for three saves and the shutout in goal.
"To us tonight wasn't about the opposition — it didn't matter who we were playing, we just needed to win, we needed to get some goals, create some chances and feel good," said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. "We told them at halftime that number one, it'd be really nice to win the game, but number two, to get a lead where we could clear the bench and get all the kids who work so hard some minutes. And that's what happened."
For Dike, Wednesday's effort marked her first multi-goal game of the season and fourth of her career, and she also moved into a tie for 10th place on OSU's career goals list with 21.
The junior gave OSU the lead just over nine minutes into the match when she won the ball after a quick pass from Mercado in the box and sent it to the far post to put the Cowgirls up, 1-0.
The Cowgirls took the one-goal lead into intermission, but it didn't take them long after the break to double their score. This time, it was Dike delivering the ball to Mercado, who chipped a shot from 12-yards out over Drake goalie Brooke Dennis to make it 2-0.
In the 58th minute, OSU sealed the victory. After Mercado fired a shot that was knocked away by Dennis, Dike was there for the rebound and tap in to push the score to 3-0.
With control of the scoreboard, OSU was able to empty its bench as 23 Cowgirls saw action.
OSU returns to action Friday when it hosts Oral Roberts at 7 p.m. in its final non-conference match of the regular season.
