Cowgirls Rout Oral Roberts, 8-0
October 09, 2015 | Cowgirl Soccer
STILLWATER, Okla. -- Seven different players netted goals for Oklahoma State Friday night as the Cowgirls cruised to an 8-0 win over Oral Roberts at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
In improving to 7-6-2 on the season, OSU recorded its most goals in a game since 2011 when the Cowgirls had nine against Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the opening round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship.
Three different Cowgirls – Lana Duke, Morgan McDougal and Joanna Robertson – each delivered the first goals of their careers as OSU recorded four scores in each half and scored on eight of its 24 shots in the contest. Marlo Zoller scored a pair of goals.
OSU's eight goals tied for the seventh most in a single game in program history but was well shy of the school record of 13 set against Northwestern State in 1997.
"We've been working really hard in practice on finishing our chances. We've been creating a ton of chances in every single game – we've outshot just about everybody we've played – and so tonight they started going in," said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. "You just hope that continues. Soccer is strange. One night you'll go out and can't finish anything, and the next night everything you hit goes in."
Allie Stephenson got the Cowgirls out to an early lead with her third goal of the season when, in the 10th minute, the senior midfielder blasted a 20-yard shot to the far upper post.
Over the next minute, ORU (5-6-2) nearly recorded the equalizer on a pair of shots – two of their six on the night – but both chances deflected off the crossbar.
During a 5:46 span later in the opening half, the Cowgirls would add three more goals to their lead. The first came when Marlo Zoller tapped in the rebound of a Courtney Dike shot that was saved, and Haley Woodard then made it 3-0 with her third goal of the season.
OSU's final score prior to intermission came when the Golden Eagles were whistled for a hand ball in the box. Anna Beffer then stepped up and buried the penalty kick to give the home team a 4-0 advantage.
In the second half, Zoller got the scoring started with her fourth goal of the season in the 59th minute.
Carmichael cleared the bench early in the final half, and the OSU reserves continued the offensive onslaught with Duke, McDougal and Robertson adding their names to the list of Cowgirl goal scorers.
Friday's match marked OSU's final non-conference tilt of the season. The Cowgirls return to action Friday when they face Iowa State in Ames.
