STILLWATER, Okla. -
The No. 29 Oklahoma State men's tennis team's Jakob Sude has been named the 2014 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, the conference announced Tuesday. Sude also earned a spot on the All-Big 12 Singles Team and shared an honor with Arjun Kadhe on the conference's doubles squad.
Sude, a junior from Friedrichshafen, Germany, accumulated a 9-10 singles mark in his first dual season as a Cowboy, highlighted by wins over No. 38 Leandro Toledo (Minnesota), No. 34 Mikelis Libietis (Tennessee) and No. 119 Arturs Kazijevs (SMU). His stellar play helped him reach as high as the No. 61 spot in ITA's National Singles Rankings this season, where he currently stands at No. 77.
The No. 1 singles standout also recorded five wins over ranked opponents in doubles play, as he joined Kadhe to take down No. 11 Chappell/Stein (TCU), No. 16 Glasspool/Hess-Olesen (Texas), No. 23 Harris/Webb (OU), No. 55 Nowicki/Slobodkins (SMU) and No. 82 Dojas/Soares (Texas Tech). The duo's current position as the 14th-ranked team in the polls is its highest of 2014, helping the tandem earn a trip to the NCAA Doubles Championships on May 21.
Sude is now the fourth Cowboy to earn the conference's Newcomer of the Year award, joining Oleksandr Nedovyesov (2007), Ivan Puchkarov (2006) and Pavel Kudrnac (1997). For more updates and information, follow @CowboyTennis on Twitter.
