STILLWATER -
Oklahoma State's women's tennis team wrapped up its home schedule on Saturday with a 7-0 sweep of West Virginia on Senior Day at the Greenwood Tennis Center. The win was the team's eighth-straight, and marks the first time since the 1990-91 season that a Cowgirl tennis team started 6-0 in conference play.
“I think that we did what we needed to do today,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “Senior Day is always emotional with such a good leader like (Kanyapat Narattana), so the girls wanted to win and do well. There was a little extra pressure on the match, but the girls handled it all well.”
The Cowgirls (12-5, 6-0 Big 12) took the early lead by clinching the doubles point with wins on one and three. Viktoriya Lushkova and Kanyapat Narattana posted the first victory of the day with an 8-2 triumph over West Virginia's Kaja Mrgole and Oana Manole on one. Katrina Adamovic and Karyn Guttormsen clinched the point for Oklahoma State, defeating Irinka Toidze and Vivian Tsui in a dominant 8-1 win.
Adamovic and Guttormsen both continued their momentum moving forward, and became the first two Cowgirls on the board in singles play. Adamovic led Manole, 6-0, 1-0, on three before Manole was forced to withdraw from the match due to injury. Guttormsen stretched the Cowgirl lead to three with a 6-0, 6-1 win on five.
Freshman Megan McCray picked up the match-deciding win in her first time competing in the one spot for the Cowgirls. McCray overpowered Hailey Barrett of West Virginia, 6-2, 6-2, to pick up her sixth-straight win.
Carla Tur Mari piled on to the Cowgirl lead with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ikttesh Chahal on five.
Narattana was victorious in singles play during her final home match, knocking off Mrgole in straight-sets to put the Cowgirls one point away from the sweep.
“As she was near the end, there were a lot of emotions,” Young said. “It's tough for seniors to be able to finish it off and be done. Now she's got that behind her and we are able to look forward to next weekend, which is going to be important.”
Maria Alvarez completed the sweep for Oklahoma State with her win on six. After taking the first set, Alvarez found herself down, 3-0, in her second. The sophomore clawed back and won six-straight games to close out the match.
“Everybody knows at this point in the season what they need to do to prepare (for the next match),” Young said. “It's more about working hard this week. I expect to have a really good week of practice. The girls will be really focused and ready to go. It's going to be a big match for us Friday.”
Next weekend, the Cowgirls will head south for two top-25 road matches against No. 16 Baylor and No. 25 Texas. Oklahoma State will take on the Bears Friday, April 11, in Waco, Texas, before travelling to Austin Texas to face the Longhorns on Sunday, April 13.
