FORT WORTH, Texas -
The No. 28 Oklahoma State men's tennis team took No. 6 Baylor to the brink in the 2014 Big 12 Championship semifinals on Saturday, but was ousted by the top-seeded Bears, 4-2, at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
After taking down fourth-seeded Texas Tech in exhilarating fashion on Friday, the Cowboys (21-7) saw their conference championship hopes fall just short against Baylor, who advances to its third-consecutive title match.
The Bears grabbed control early on by earning doubles victories at Nos. 2 and 3. Sebastian Sachs and Lucas Gerch were overpowered by Lenz/Dornbusch, 8-2, and Galeano/Lupieri won four consecutive games to close out their 8-4 win over Chris Haworth and Brady Bohrnstedt. Arjun Kadhe and Jakob Sude held a 7-4 lead over No. 36 Pradella/Zsiga, but had their match end unfinished.
Oklahoma State rebounded by taking the first set at Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5, and maintained a 4-1 set advantage despite Haworth's straight sets defeat on court six. With Baylor holding a 2-0 lead, Bohrnstedt gave the Cowboys their first point of the day by overpowering No. 107 Michel Dornbusch, 7-5, 6-1. The victory ended a six-match skid for the senior and cut the Baylor advantage to one.
On court one, Jakob Sude fought back from a 5-3 deficit to force a tiebreaker against second-ranked Julian Lenz, but Baylor's top singles standout increased the Bears' advantage with a 6-3, 7-6(3) triumph. Oklahoma State came back firing, however, as Kadhe held off No. 29 Diego Galeano, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, after converting in three different games that reached a deuce.
Gerch and Sachs battled in the remaining two matches on courts two and six, but early third-set deficits put both Cowboys in a hole. Sachs was on the verge of forcing a 5-5 tie with No. 16 Patrick Pradella, but Mate Zsiga's 6-7(0), 6-2, 6-3 final over Gerch ended the OSU threat.
The Cowboys will find out where their postseason journey will take them next during Tuesday's NCAA Selection Show, which will begin at 4 p.m. and can be viewed at www.ncaa.com. For more updates and information, follow @CowboyTennis on Twitter.
