Two Cowgirls Earn Big 12 Honors

STILLWATER - Oklahoma State women's tennis team members Katarina Adamovic and Maria Alvarez have been named Big 12 singles champions in their respective positions, the league office announced Tuesday. Adamovic earned the 2014 title at No. 4 singles while Alvarez is this year's champion at No. 6 singles. This marks the first season since 2007 that two or more Cowgirls earned conference singles championships in the same year.
Adamovic posted a 6-3 record at the No. 4 spot in Big 12 play this season. The freshman's six wins tie her atop the list at her position with Blair Shankle of Baylor and Oklahoma's Mia Lancaster. Adamovic is the 17th Cowgirl in school history to earn a conference singles title at the No. 4 position.
Alvarez was perfect at the No. 6 singles position in conference play this season, posting a 6-0 record to take the title outright. The sophomore is the 12th Cowgirl to be crowned singles champion in the sixth spot. Along with the singles championship, Alvarez was also named to the Academic All-Big 12 second team. The second team consists of members who have maintained a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
Freshman Viktoriya Lushkova finished third in the race at the No. 1 singles position with a 6-2 record in the top spot during Big 12 play. Breaunna Addison of Texas took the No. 1 title with eight wins, followed by TCU's Stefanie Tan who finished second at the position with seven Big 12 singles wins.
Freshman Megan McCray was only one victory short of the No. 2 singles title, finishing tied for third with Oklahoma's Hermon Brhane. McCray finished behind Ema Burgic of Baylor and TCU's Simona Parajova who shared the 2014 title.
In doubles, two Cowgirl tandems posted second-place finishes. Lushkova and senior Kanyapat Narattana finished one win behind Whitney Ritchie and Mia Lancaster of Oklahoma for the No. 1 doubles title. Carla Tur Mari and Maria Alvarez tied for second in the No. 2 doubles spot behind Texas Tech's Nikki Sanders and Rashmi Teltumbde.
The Cowgirls will compete in Big 12 tournament play this weekend. The team will be in action on Friday, April 25, at 3 p.m., when it takes on the winner of Thursday's match between Kansas State and West Virginia.
