COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Oklahoma State softball team defeated UMKC, 8-2 at the Mizzou Tournament Friday night at University Field.
The Cowgirls (18-10) jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning. Shelby Davis led the game off with an infield single, and two batters later, Tiffany Mikkelson walked to put runners on first and third. The next batter, Danielle Riddle roped a double into left center, clearing the bases and putting OSU up 2-0.
OSU extended that lead in the top of the second innings when Ari Morrison doubled to centerfield, scoring Miranda Cavin and Shannon Kaufman. The next batter, Tarah Ettinger, singled up the middle, scoring Mikkelson. Later in the innings, Mikkelson (4) hit a two-run bomb to center field, scoring Ettinger and putting the Cowgirls up 7-0.
UMKC (10-17) got two runs in the bottom of the third inning when Bri Wyatt scored on a single by Marlee Maples. Later in the inning, Maples would score on a single by Alexandra Friloux to cut the Cowgirls lead to 7-2.
The Cowgirls made it an 8-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning when Riddle hit a line-drive solo homerun, her first of the season, to centerfield.
At the plate, the Cowgirls had 14 hits. Riddle led the team offensively, going 3-for-5 with three runs batted in, a run scored, a double and a home run. Davis went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Morrison ended the game 2-for-4, two RBIs and a double. Mikkelson was 1-for-2 with two RBIs, two runs scored and a home run. Ettinger was also 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Shianne Hughes and Dre McKee both had doubles and Cavin, Kaufman and Gessenia DeLaCruz all had base hits for OSU.
Starting pitcher, Simone Freeman (13-5) pitched three innings, giving up two runs, both unearned, on three hits and striking out four. Meagan Lively entered the game in the bottom of the fourth inning and pitched four innings, allowing no runs on one hit and eight strikeouts. She also earned her first career save.
The Cowgirls return to the diamond tomorrow evening when they take on the No. 18/20 Missouri Tigers at 4:30 p.m.
