STILLWATER, Okla. - The Oklahoma State softball team swept a double header against New Mexico Friday night at Cowgirl Stadium. The Cowgirls took game one, 6-3, and won the second game by a score of 5-0.
In game one, the Cowgirls (17-9) took an early lead, when in the first inning, Tarah Ettinger singled, scoring Shelby Davis from second. The next batter, Tiffany Mikkelson, doubled down the leftfield line, scoring Ettinger and putting OSU up 2-0.
OSU took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Shianne Hughes doubled to leftfield, scoring Mikkelson from third. Later in the inning, Whitney Whitehorn walked with the bases loaded, allowing Danielle Riddle to score. The next inning, the Cowgirls extended their lead when Riddle scored on an RBI single by Simone Freeman. Hughes would later score on a bases loaded walk issued to Shannon Kaufman, putting OSU up 6-0.
New Mexico (8-17) would get three runs on the board in the top of the sixth, aided by Jasmine Casados' two-run homerun. The Lobos would not get any more offense, and OSU would win game one, 6-3.
In the circle, Freeman (12-4) pitched six innings, allowing no runs on three hits and striking out 10. Peyton Walker pitched one inning, giving up three runs on three hits.
Offensively, the Cowgirls had 10 hits. Ettinger went 2-for-4 with a run batted in. Riddle and Hughes both went 2-for-3. Mikkelson, Freeman, Ari Morrison and Gessenia DeLaCruz all had base hits for OSU.
In the second game of the double header, the Cowgirls got on the board in the bottom of the third inning when Mikkelson scored when DeLaCruz smoked a ball up the middle, giving OSU a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Oklahoma State put four runs on the board. Dre McKee singled to center, scoring Michaela Patton from third. Later in the inning, DeLaCruz would score from third on an error. Two batters later, Davis reached first on an error by the shortstop, allowing Hughes and Miranda Cavin to score, giving the Cowgirls the 5-0 lead and victory.
In the circle, Meagan Lively (1-1) pitched five innings, allowing no runs on one hit and striking out 10. Freeman entered the game in the top of the sixth inning, allowing no runs on one hit and striking out three.
At the plate, OSU slugged nine hits. Morrison went 2-for-3. McKee went 2-for-3 with an RBI and DeLaCruz went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Davis, Cavin and Kaufman each had hits, while Mikkelson has a double and an RBI.
Due to rain in the forecast, games tomorrow will be moved up two hours.
