WICHITA, Kan. -
The No. 29 Oklahoma State men's tennis team improved its record-setting start on Friday with a 4-2 victory over 61st-ranked Wichita State at the Genesis Health Club.
In what was arguably the Cowboys' closest match of the season, OSU (9-0) fended off a resilient Wichita State squad that gave the Cowboys a rigorous challenge away from home.
In doubles play, 38th-ranked Arjun Kadhe and Brady Bohrnstedt delivered a 6-4 win in their first appearance at the No. 1 spot, while Jakob Sude and Sebastian Sachs earned their first doubles victory of the year together in a 6-4 triumph on court two. Lucas Gerch and Matt Campbell suffered their second defeat on the season at No. 3, but the team's wins at Nos. 1 and 2 were enough to give the Cowboys the doubles point.
Oklahoma State jumped out to take the first set on five out of six courts in singles play, but the Shockers grabbed the first singles point with Tin Ostojic's 6-5(5), 6-3 win over Kadhe, who suffered his first loss of the year.
The Cowboys provided a quick answer with straight set wins from 70th-ranked Sude and Chris Haworth at Nos. 1 and 6. Sude pushed his singles record to 4-0 with a 6-3 6-4 victory over Ilija Cuic, and Haworth delivered a 6-3, 6-4 success of his own, giving the Pokes a 3-1 advantage.
Wichita State then brought back pressure when Sebastian Sachs, appearing at the No. 3 spot for the first time, took a close three set defeat from Tomislav Gregurovic. Guillermo Nicol also forced a third set from Gerch at No. 5, and Bohrnstedt failed to convert a second set tiebreaker into the match's final point.
With the match on line, Bohrnstedt pulled out a 7-4 third set tiebreaker win to give the Cowboys a road victory and keep their undefeated season alive. The junior, playing in his fourth consecutive match to reach a third set, improved his overall record to 11-0 in 2014, with five of those wins coming in singles play.
OSU will continue its eight-match road trip next weekend with matchups at No. 64 Arkansas and No. 34 Tulsa. Saturday's faceoff in Fayetteville, Ark., will begin at 1 p.m., and the team's competition in Tulsa will kick off on Sunday at 2 p.m.
