Cowgirls Open Play at Missouri Invitational

The Oklahoma State women's tennis team began play at the Missouri Invitational on Friday in Kansas City, Mo. The Cowgirls had an impressive showing on the first day of competition, recording three doubles wins and four singles wins.
In the first event of the day, the Cowgirls faced Missouri in doubles competition, and took two of three matches from the Tigers. Oklahoma State's Kanyapat Narattana and Carla Tur Mari knocked off the 32nd-ranked doubles team in the nation in Missouri's Elisha Gabb and Cierra Gaytan-Leach, 8-5. Also victorious on Friday were Cowgirls Karyn Guttormsen and Maria Alvarez, who defeated Kelli Hine and Cassidy Spearman of Missouri, 8-5. Cowgirl freshmen Morgan McCray and Megan McCray fell, 8-5, in their first match of the day against Tracy Dong and Rachel Stuhlmann.
The Cowgirls took on Princeton in the following round of doubles competition. Narattana and Tur Mari notched their second triumph of the day when they defeated Princeton's Emily Hahn and Katherine Flannigan, 8-5. Guttormsen and Alvarez fell short to Alanna Wolff and Dorothy Tang in their second match, 8-4.
In singles play, the Cowgirls matched up with Nebraska and took four of seven matches from the Cornhuskers, all of which came in straight sets. Freshman Morgan McCray defeated Katerina Matysova, 6-3, 6-0, to notch her first collegiate win. Megan McCray won her match as well, defeating Mary Hanna, 6-1, 6-1. Junior Cowgirl Karyn Guttormsen knocked off Izabella Zgierska, 7-6(3), 6-1, while sophomore Maria Alvarez defeated Lisa Anderssen, 6-2, 7-5, to grab her first victory of the year. Senior Kanyapat Narattana dropped a close third set tiebreaker in her match to give Nebraska's Maggy Lehmicke the 5-7, 7-6 (0), 12-10 win. Carla Tur Mari also lost in a tiebreaker, dropping a tough match to Brittany Brewster, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (1), 12-10. Freshman Mariah Burke fell to Maike Zeppernick, 6-4, 6-3, in her first collegiate match.
The Cowgirls will continue play at the Missouri Invitational on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. CT.
