NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma State's Kelsey Vines and Julie Yang both won their opening matches during the first round of match play at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship on Wednesday to advance to the round of 32 at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.
Vines knocked off Clariss Guce, 6 and 4, to advance, while Yang took care of Lakareber Abe, 4 and 3, to move on.
A senior for the Cowgirls this past spring, Vines birdied the first to take a lead she would not surrender. She added birdies at the third, fifth and seventh to help build a 3-up lead through nine holes.
The 2013 Big 12 Player of the Year won the 10th, 11th and 12th to go 6-up and closed out the match with a par to win the 14th hole.
Like Vines, Yang never trailed in her match, grabbing her first lead at the third. She added a birdie to win the fourth and won the sixth and seventh with a par and birdie, respectively. After Abe won the eighth, the duo halved the next four holes before Yang moved back to 4-up with a par at the 13th.
The rising sophomore closed out the match with halves on the next two holes.
Vines will begin her second-round match against Krista Puisite tomorrow at 9:20 a.m., while Yang will take on Jade Staggs at 9:50 a.m.
