Cowgirls Return To NCAA Championship For First Time Since 2010
For the first time since 2010, Oklahoma State's women's golf team will compete at the NCAA Championship. The 72-hole event will run from May 21-24 and will be contested at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga. The Cowgirls will begin play at 12:55 p.m. (EST) on Tuesday and will be grouped with Florida and South Carolina. That same trio will start its second round on Wednesday at 8:28 a.m. Teams will be regrouped for the final two rounds. OSU's lineup will consist of senior Kelsey Vines, juniors Lauren Falley, Josephine Janson and Jayde Panos as well as freshman Julie Yang.
OSU In NCAA Play
The Cowgirls competed in 10 consecutive NCAA Championships from 2001 through 2010. This year will mark the program's 20th appearance overall in the event. OSU also competed in five AIAW Championships from 1978-1982.OSU's inaugural appearance came in the first-ever NCAA Women's Golf Championship in 1982, when the Cowgirls finished third. OSU has 12 top 10s at the tournament, and six top-five finishes. OSU's best performance at the championship came in 2004 when the Cowgirls finished as national runner-up to UCLA in Opelika, Ala. OSU has two third-place finishes, first in 1982 and then again in 1989. Caroline Hedwall became OSU's first NCAA champion in 2010, while Karin Sjödin was the event's runner-up in 2004 and Pernilla Lindberg was third in 2009.
NCAA Rewind ... 2010 Championship
Caroline Hedwall became the first Cowgirl golfer to win medalist honors at the NCAA Championship. The sophomore fired a final-round 68 at the Country Club of Landfall to finish four shots clear of Arizona State's Jennifer Johnson. Hedwall broke par all four days at the event en route to her 12-under total of 276. In the process, Hedwall led OSU to an eighth-place finish in the team race. The Cowgirls tied Duke at 27-over 1,179 at the par-72, 6,368-yard layout. In eight events during the spring, she never finished worse than fourth while winning four times and finishing third on two occasions. Overall, she finished the year with five victories. Victoria Park finished tied for 27th place at 5-over 293. Hillary Wood tied for 67th place at 301, while Courtney McKim tied for 108th at 309 after finishing play with a 309. Eyglo Oskarsdottir carded a 337 total to finish in 126th place.
