SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
Oklahoma State's No. 72 men's tennis team defeated UAB 4-2 on Friday in the second round of the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley Spring Classic at the Aztec Tennis Center.
OSU (8-6) opened play in the spring tournament on Thursday, when they fell to No. 37 San Diego State, while UAB was defeated by 23rd-ranked Harvard.
The Cowboys' continuous doubles supremacy halted the red-hot Blazers, who had won ten of the team's last 12 matches. The 43rd-ranked pairing of Richard Del Nunzio and Denys Pume improved to 8-0 on the season, helping the Cowboys to their 26th consecutive doubles victory.
In singles play, Chris Haworth provided a crucial comeback win for the Cowboys at the No. 2 spot after losing the first set. The sophomore fired back to win the next two sets and put OSU at a sizeable advantage.
After UAB closed the gap and won at Nos. 1 and 4, Brady Bohrnstedt clinched the win for the Cowboys with a hard-fought 7-6(3), 7-5 victory over Lucas Dirube.
The win places Cowboy Tennis in the fifth place match tomorrow against either Denver or No. 38 San Diego. The match will be played at 4 p.m. CST at San Diego's Hogan Tennis Center.
