Cowboys Finish Sixth in San Diego Invitational

Oklahoma State's No. 72 men's tennis team finished sixth in the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley Spring Classic on Saturday after it fell in a 4-3 heartbreaker at No. 38 San Diego's Hogan Tennis Center.
After defeating UAB on Friday, OSU (8-7) needed a victory against the Toreros to win the tournament's consolation championship. The Cowboys continued their remarkable doubles streak by winning the team's 27th and 28th consecutive doubles matches. No. 43 Denys Pume and Richard Del Nunzio proved their worth as a national power in an 8-5 victory, while Chris Haworth paired up with Brady Bohrnstedt to win and help OSU to a crucial point.
Singles play proved to be the force behind the Toreros' comeback victory, as they won the first three singles matches at Nos. 3, 1 and 6. Haworth fired back to close the gap with a straight sets victory over Romain Kalaydijan, while Pume evened the match with a thrilling three set victory.
With the score tied at three, Del Nunzio sat deadlocked with Victor Pugliese in a three set match on court five. The freshman battled, but could not provide a come-from-behind victory, giving San Diego the match-winning point.
The Cowboys will return home on March 28th for a doubleheader against Wichita State and Seminole State College in Stillwater.
