Cowboys Power Through Opening Day Of ITA Regionals

Oklahoma State's men's tennis team surged through the first two rounds of qualifying play on Thursday with an 8-1 overall record at the ITA Central Regional Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
Five Cowboys made opening round appearances in Tulsa, with four advancing through the first two rounds of the competition and earning spots in tomorrow morning's final round of qualifying.
Freshman Nathan Roper got the Cowboys rolling early with a quick 6-0, 6-0 victory over Western Illinois' Max Cederkall, while Vasili Caripi used momentum from a first set tiebreak win to take his opening round match, 7-6(4), 6-3.
Senior Trevor Horstmann also provided a thorough opening to his tournament run with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Arkansas' Pete Thomason. To close out the first round, Matt Campbell took his match with SDSU's Mateus Moreira to a thrilling finish by pulling out the victory in a super tiebreaker.
In the second round, the Cowboys fired through each match in straight-set victories to end a dominating performance on the day for the squad.
Caripi, Horstmann, Roper and Campbell will each attempt to earn a spot in the tournament's main draw by advancing through the final round of qualifying play tomorrow at 8 a.m.
Also providing a win for the Cowboys was Jakob Sude, who advanced to the quarterfinals of Mansfield's F27 Futures with a 6-3, 0-6, 6-4 victory over Jesus Bandres. The German will face off against TCU's Arnau Dachs tomorrow for a shot at playing in the tournament semifinals.
