STILLWATER, Okla. - The Oklahoma State men's tennis team fell just short in an upset bid of No. 28 Baylor on Sunday afternoon, as the Bears escaped with a 4-3 victory.
The Bears (14-10, 2-2) swept doubles to pick up the first point of the dual. They took a 2-0 lead after a quick victory at No. 6 singles, but Cowboy sophomore Rifat Biktyakov put the Pokes on the board with a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot.
The Cowboys (7-12, 0-4) took the other four matches into a third set, needing to win three of the matches to win the dual, but were only able to split with the Bears, giving Baylor the advantage.
After senior and 100th-ranked Vlad Bondarenko fell to No. 23 Mate Zsiga, 6-0, 3-6, 6-1, senior Eric West gave the team a boost with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 victory at the No. 4 spot.
Baylor sealed the victory when No. 95 Roberto Maytin defeated freshman Chris Haworth, 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3. Junior Trevor Horstmann picked up the Cowboys third point after defeating Lars Behlen, 5-7, 7-5, 6-4, at the No. 5 spot.
The Cowboys will close out the regular season on Thursday when they host Bedlam at the DeBois Tennis Complex at 2 p.m.
