Buck Sets High Jump Record

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Oklahoma State track and field program turned in another record-setting performance Friday as sophomore Taylor Buck recorded the best men's high jump mark in Oklahoma State history.
Buck, a walk-on from Medicine Lodge, Kan., is the first men's high jumper to compete at Oklahoma State in several years. His jump of 2.14 meters (7'0¼”) edged out the previous record of 7'0” set by Rich Geske at the 1975 John Jacobs Invite.
“It feels good to jump that high,” Buck said. “I had never jumped higher than 6'10” before and that was back in high school. I didn't even know I had jumped seven feet until after I did it. It means a lot to have the record, but I give all the credit to the Lord.”
Buck, whose mark was also enough for a first-place finish in the event, is the only men's high jumper since 1979 to make the OSU top-10 performance list.
“I'm really proud of Taylor for he's been able to do this year,” coach Dave Smith said. “He came in as a walk-on and has gotten better every week. He's got the 16th-best mark in the region now and he doesn't get enough credit for what he does. To come in as a walk-on and turn into an all-Big 12 caliber performer is outstanding.
“I'm also really proud of (assistant coach) Zivile (Pukstiene). Her group has been able to accomplish some great things this year. They have all gotten better and she's done a fantastic job with all of our jumpers.”
Oklahoma State's other top performances at the meet included Shane Moskowitz (fourth in the men's 1,500 meters at 3:47.55), Clarissa Andrews (second in the women's triple jump with a season-best mark of 12.70 meters), Brandi Andrews (sixth in the women's 800 meters at 2:10.59) and Mihaela Susa (first in the women's 1,500 meters at 4:26.80).
The OSU track and field program returns to action next weekend for the Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Norman, Okla.
