WACO, Texas – The seventh-seeded Oklahoma State men's tennis team wrapped up its season Friday at the Big 12 Championship with a 4-0 loss to second-seeded and ninth-ranked Texas A&M at the Baylor Tennis Center.
Although the Aggies claimed the opening doubles point, it was closely contested. TAMU earned an 8-5 win at No. 3 before its fourth-ranked duo of Austin Krajicek and Jeff Dadamo edged out OSU's 28th-ranked tandem of Rifat Biktyakov and Aleksey Bessonov in a tiebreaker, 9-8(3), at No. 1 to take the early 1-0 lead.
Had the Cowboys picked up the tiebreaker win on court No. 1, the point would have come down to the No. 2 match which was left unfinished in a 7-7 tie.
“The doubles were really contested,” coach James Wadley said. “We lost the tie-breaker at No.1 and we were 7-all at No.2. I thought we played pretty well against their doubles team, but they were just a little too strong. In the singles they are awfully strong. I thought we battled pretty well, but in the end A&M is just a better team.”
Texas A&M capitalized on the momentum from doubles play as the Aggies picked up singles wins at Nos. 2, 3 and 4 to go up 4-0 and advance to the semifinal round.
The Cowboys finish the year at 5-14 while TAMU improves to 25-5.
