Tulsa, Okla. -- Freshman Simone Freeman threw a four-hit shutout, striking out seven and walking none, as Oklahoma State's 19th-ranked softball team defeated Tulsa 2-0 here Wednesday evening at the Hardesty Sports Complex.
The Cowgirls scored their first run in the top of the third when Mariah Gearhart scored on a base hit up the middle by Alysia Hamilton. The OSU leadoff hitter led off the inning with a bunt single, stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice hit by Ari Morrison.
Oklahoma State added an insurance run in the top of the fifth. Kelsey Anchors led off with a double and after Gearhart reached on her NCAA-record 78th hit by pitch, Morrison singled to load the bases. Hamilton hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Anchors. However, Gearhart was thown out at third on a nice play by Lauren Menke, throwing the Cowgirl speedster out from right field.
Tulsa made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh. Samantha Cobb led off with a single up the middle and Aimee Creger followed with a double to left center. However, Freeman pulled out of the inning, striking out Shelby Blanton and forcing Haley Henshaw and Keri Leach to fly out to end the game.
Oklahoma State (12-3) will host Illinois-Chicago on Friday, March 4, in the first game of the Preview Featuring Bedlam. First pitch is slated for 6 pm at Cowgirl Stadium. OSU will face Auburn at 12:30 pm and Oklahoma at 6 pm on Saturday at ASA/Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. The tournament will conclude on Sunday with OSU hosting Auburn at 11 am in Stillwater.
