OSU Wins Four More Titles at Big 12s

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Oklahoma State track and field program wrapped up the 2011 Big 12 Indoor Championships with several championship performances at Nebraska's Bob Devaney Center, as German Fernandez, Tom Farrell, Mihaela Susa and Natalja Piliusina each won individual titles to bring OSU's meet total to five, including Friday's win from the women's distance medley relay team.
“I was really proud of the guys for how they did with a limited roster,” coach Dave Smith said. “We just missed finishing in the top half of the team standings and were only entered in a fourth of the events, which was really impressive.”
Fernandez's title, the sixth conference championship of his career, came in the one mile run with a time of 4:06.22, with teammates Kirubel Erassa and Shane Moskowitz following closely behind in third and fifth, respectively.
“I just went out there trying to score points,” Fernandez said. “I got a lead early and cruised to the end.”
Farrell's Big 12 championship came in the 3,000-meter run, where he finished about five seconds in front of second-place Fernandez with his time of 8:00.20.
“Tom ran a really good race and won pretty easily,” Smith said. “He actually had a shot to break German's record but pulled up toward the end because he didn't know close he was. I was really proud of how our younger guys ran.”
Oklahoma State also proved dominant in the mile run on the women's side, where Susa crossed the line at 4:44.17 for her first Big 12 individual championship and second overall as she ran the final leg for Friday's DMR championship team.
“It feels great,” Susa said after the race. “I was kind of tired before and sore from yesterday, but I felt OK during the race. I am very pleased, even if the time wasn't that great. I can't say that it was easy, it was painful the last 600 meters.”
Piliusina handily won her title in the 800 meters as she topped the second-place finish by nearly two seconds with her time of 2:08.47, giving her the second title her career and meet as she was also on the DMR squad.
“Mihaela got her first individual title and Natalja got a great kick off to her career with a couple of championships,” Smith said. “Both girls ran great yesterday and today.”
The men's squad wrapped up the event in seventh place as a team with 47 points, while the women scored 30 points in 10th place.
The Cowboys and Cowgirls now turn their attention to the final weeks of the season, where they will compete at the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, Ind., March 4-5 and the Arkansas Last Chance Meet in Fayetteville, Ark., March 5 before traveling to College Station, Texas for the NCAA Indoor Championships beginning March 11.
