Late Goal Lifts Cowgirls To Win

STILLWATER, Okla. – Kyndall Treadwell's goal in the 88th minute gave 12th-ranked Oklahoma State a 2-1 win over Baylor in Friday night's Big 12 Conference opener at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
In a battle of the two teams with the best record in the league, the Cowgirls ran their unbeaten streak to seven games and improved to 8-1-1 on the season. Baylor fell to 7-2-1.
At the 87:33 mark, Treadwell blasted a shot from 20-yards out that beat BU goalie Courtney Seelhorst to the far post and gave OSU the win. It was the second goal of the season for Treadwell and her first since the Cowgirls' season opener.
“I was so happy. I've been in a slump lately, and someone needed to step up and finish a goal,” Treadwell said. “I was determined to put one in.”
In a very physical contest, neither team mustered much offense in the opening half, with Baylor owning a 6-2 advantage in shots. OSU's best opportunity to score came with 3:35 remaining before intermission on a shot by Katie Richardson.
“In the first half, we were scared. We were soft, we weren't aggressive, we got bullied, we got outmuscled, outfought, outhustled,” OSU head coach Colin Carmichael said. “At halftime, we told them that wasn't acceptable. That's not how we like to play, that's not how I think the game should be played, but sometimes you have to roll your sleeves up and battle. And in the second half we did a much better job of it.”
It would not take either team long to break its scoring slump after halftime.
Just over three minutes into the second half, OSU freshman Kristen Kelley recorded the first goal of her collegiate career when she delivered a shot into the back of the net from six-yards out after a scramble for possession in the box.
But OSU's lead would not last long. In the 52nd minute, BU's Dana Larsen sent a cross from the near side towards the Cowgirl goal, and the ball got through the hands of OSU goalie AD Franch then bounced over the line for the equalizer.
Over the next 26 minutes, the match remained deadlocked and appeared headed for overtime until Treadwell's late heroics.
“Kyndall has been playing really well without showing up on the stat line as much,” Carmichael said. “Tonight she probably didn't have her best game, but she scored a great goal at the end for us. It's a sign of a mentally tough kid that if you haven't scored and haven't been having your best day, you can step up when the team needs you and score a goal.”
OSU returns to action Sunday at 1 p.m. against Texas Tech, which opened conference play with a 3-1 win over Oklahoma Friday.
