STILLWATER, Okla. – The No. 57 Oklahoma State women's tennis team defeated Iowa State, 5-2, at the DeBois Tennis Complex Friday, sweeping doubles competition and earning four singles wins to improve to 34-0 all-time against the Cyclones.
The team result, however, was not decided until late in the match after three singles matches went to third sets to determine the winners.
“A win is a win,” coach Chris Young said. “I think there's something to be said for winning ugly sometimes and we did that today. We found a way to win. That's what's important and we can't lose sight of that. Even though we didn't play our best, we still found a way to win.”
Oklahoma State, now 12-8 (5-5) on the year and on a three-match winning streak, won all three doubles matches to begin the dual and go up, 1-0.
The Cowgirls carried their momentum into singles play as Sarah Meghoufel won over Iowa State's Jenna Langhorst, 6-2, 6-0, and Alisa Buslaieva beat ISU's Tessa Lang in straight sets to put OSU up, 3-0.
The Cyclones answered with wins from Maria Fernanda Macedo over Sasha Belova at the No. 2 line and Liza Wischer over Alexandra Cristello at the No. 6 spot.
With only the No. 1 and 5 singles matches remaining, both in a tight third-set competition, the Cowgirls needed only one win to seal the dual result.
OSU got more than that, however, as Nataliya Shatkovskaya topped ISU's Erin Karonis (ISU), 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, and Malika Rose defeated ISU's Marie-Christine Chartier in a tiebreaker, 6-0, 4-6, 7-6(6), to make the final score, 5-2, Oklahoma State.
The Cowgirls resume play at home Saturday, facing Nebraska at noon to close out the regular season.
“Nebraska is going to be a big challenge for us,” Young said. “We've won three matches in a row and I don't feel like we have as much momentum as we need to have going into that match, but sports is a funny thing. When you have a match like this when you don't play your best, it's easy to come back the next day and leave everything behind you and play lights out. That's what I'm hoping for.”
