STILLWATER, Okla. - The No. 57 Oklahoma State women's tennis team wrapped up the 2010 regular season Saturday, falling to No. 40 Nebraska, 4-3, at the DeBois Tennis Complex.
"I'm happy with the girls for the way they competed against Nebraska, who is the hottest team in the Big 12 with the wins they've had lately," coach Chris Young said. "I think we could have competed better at a couple of spots and that was maybe the difference today. The girls really laid it out there and we had several chances to win. If tough losses at No. 3 and No. 5 would have gone our way then we could have got it."
With potentially rainy conditions, the match began with singles competition in an effort to quickly determine a team result.
Oklahoma State, who finished the regular season with a 12-9 (5-6) record, struck first as Sarah Meghoufel quickly defeated Nebraska's Stefanie Weinstein in straight sets on the No. 4 court to put OSU up, 1-0.
The Huskers answered with two-set wins of their own at the No. 2 and 6 spots to go up, 2-1.
After the first three matches were completed, only the No. 1, 3 and 5 courts remained, with the Cowgirls needing to win at least two to stay in contention for the team win.
Oklahoma State took all three matches to a deciding third set, but only earned a win at No. 1 singles, where Nataliya Shatkovskaya defeated Nebraska's Madeleine Geibert in a tiebreaker, 7-5, 1-6, 7-6(5).
With the Huskers leading, 4-2, and the dual result already decided, the doubles competition was not played. Default victories, however, were rewarded, with Oklahoma State winning two of three matches to make the final score, 4-3, Nebraska.
The Cowgirls resume play at the 2010 Big 12 Championship, scheduled for April 29-May 2, in Austin, Texas.
