AUSTIN, Texas - The No. 58 Oklahoma State women's tennis team took care of Iowa State, 4-1, Thursday in the opening round of the 2010 Big 12 Women's Tennis Championship. The Cowgirls, now a perfect 35-0 all-time against the Cyclones, advance to Friday's quarterfinal round where they will face No. 2-seeded Texas at 3 p.m. at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
"I thought that our girls did well," coach Chris Young said. "It is obviously hot out there, and they took care of it. Iowa State has played us tough now twice, but the girls played well. We are just looking to getting back on the courts tomorrow and taking care of it."
With the win over Iowa State, OSU's second of the season, the Cowgirls improve to 13-9 on the year.
Oklahoma State, who finished the regular season with a 5-6 record in Big 12 play, struck first as the Cowgirls rebounded from a loss at No. 1 doubles and claimed wins at the No. 2 and 3 lines to go up, 1-0.
In singles play, OSU built its lead to 2-0 with a quick, 6-2, 6-2, win from Sasha Belova over ISU's Maria Fernanda Macedo at the No. 2 spot.
The Cyclones responded with a straight set win at No. 1 singles, but that was their only team point of the day as Sarah Meghoufel and Malika Rose stormed to straight-set wins at the No. 4 and 5 spots, respectively, to put the Cowgirls up, 4-1, and advance to the next round.
"We are excited to advance and have another opportunity to play Texas," Young said. "We had a good battle last time at home and I know our girls are excited to compete."
The Cowgirls resume play at the 2010 Big 12 Women's Tennis Championship Friday, taking on second-seeded and No. 18-ranked Texas at 3 p.m. at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin, Texas.
