TULSA, Okla. – The No. 54 Oklahoma State men's tennis team earned a 4-3 upset win over No. 34 Tulsa Wednesday, as Ilija Martinoski clinched the match for the Cowboys with a three-set win at No. 4 singles in the final match finished.
The Cowboys, now 8-10 (0-4) on the year, started the day with a new doubles lineup. Oleksandr Nedovyesov and Eric West teamed up at the No. 2 spot to win the first match completed, but OSU then dropped the No. 1 and 3 lines to give the Golden Hurricane the doubles point.
West then lost at the No. 5 spot to begin singles play, but No. 14-ranked Nedovyesov answered with a, 6-4, 6-3, win at No. 1 singles, improving his 2010 dual record to 15-3 and cutting Tulsa's lead to 2-1.
Cowboys Anton Bobytskyi and Aleksey Bessonov followed Nedovyesov's performance with straight set wins of their own at the No. 2 and 3 lines, respectively, to give OSU a one-point lead with two matches remaining.
After Tulsa's Tristan Jackson defeated Maxi Kuhn at the No. 6 spot, only the No. 4 match remained with the winner deciding the dual.
In that match, Martinoski lost the first set to Tulsa's Grant Ive, but stormed back to win the last two sets and the match, 6-7(3), 6-0, 6-3, and give Oklahoma State the deciding fourth team point.
OSU returns to action this weekend, facing Texas Tech Friday and Baylor Sunday in the final home stand of the season. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at the DeBois Tennis Complex.
