STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's women's basketball team opened the 2010-11 season with a 68-30 win over Texas Southern on Saturday afternoon in front of 1,644 fans inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
"It wasn't the prettiest thing in the world but it was fun," OSU head coach Kurt Budke said. "We are learning as we go, and what we learned tonight is that if we don't shoot well, as long as we play defense and rebound well we can win."
Despite having trouble getting on track offensively and hitting just three of their first 15 shots, the Cowgirls' defense held the Tigers (0-1) to a 29 percent shooting half en route to a 30-14 lead at the break.
In the second half, OSU clamped down even tighter, holding TSU to a 6-of-34 (18 percent) effort from the floor. The Cowgirls also settled in at the offensive end, hitting 48 percent of their shots over the final 20 minutes.
Sophomore Toni Young led all scorers and rebounders with 16 points and 13 boards. The double-double was the fourth of the Del City, Okla., native's young career.
Freshman Vicky McIntyre also reached double figures in the scoring column for the Cowgirls, adding 12 points to go with nine rebounds and three blocked shots in 18 minutes of work.
Senior Precious Robinson finished with eight points and six rebounds off the bench.
Saturday's contest marked the collegiate debut for six OSU freshmen.
"I got to look at a lot of different combinations tonight and there were three, four or five times where I pulled someone off the bench and they'd hit a three, get a rebound and bring us some energy. I thought Precious Robinson did that, Vicky McIntyre did that, Heather Howard came in and gave us a little boost," Budke said.
The Cowgirls will continue their season-opening four-game homestand next Thursday when they host Grambling St. at 7 p.m.
