NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma State extended its winning streak against Bedlam-rival Oklahoma to seven games Friday night as the 11th-ranked Cowgirls earned a 2-0 win over the Sooners in front of a record 1,946 fans at John Crain Field.
With the win, OSU ends the regular season 15-3-1, which includes an 8-2-0 mark in Big 12 Conference play. The Cowgirls finished second to Texas A&M in the league standings.
"Every game against OU is a tough fight; they're a strong team," said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. "The Bedlam games are never the prettiest or the most technical, but there's a lot of emotion... I was really proud of our team. We did enough to win the game, and we're happy to come out with another Bedlam win."
Megan Marchesano and Katie Richardson scored goals for OSU, while goalie AD Franch recorded her eighth shutout of the season with a five-save effort.
"A shutout is what we needed - it's been awhile," Franch said. "It's good for us and our confidence. And the offense did what they needed to do."
OSU got its first score on a counter attack in the 16th minute. Kyndall Treadwell outraced the defense down the far side and sent a pass to Marchesano, who blasted a shot from 12-yards out that deflected off the hand of OU goalie Kelsey Devonshire and into the back of the net. The goal was the sixth of the season for Marchesano, while Treadwell recorded her fourth assist to tie for the team lead.
The Cowgirls nearly doubled their lead three minutes later, but Devonshire made a diving save on a long shot by Marchesano and Kristen Kelley sent a shot just wide of the goal.
Carmichael's squad outshot the Sooners in the opening half, but OU had 11 shots after halftime and owned a 15-14 advantage in the match.
But OSU's defense came up strong time and again, recording its eighth shutout of the year and lowering its Big 12-best goals against average.
One of OU's best scoring chances came early in the second half on a shot by Caitlin Mooney from just outside the 18-yard box. But Franch made a diving save to keep the Sooners off the scoreboard.
Richardson would help seal the Cowgirl win in the goal in 82nd minute. With the ball on the near side, the senior drilled a shot from 25-yards out that sailed into the far upper post to give the Cowgirls a 2-0 advantage. The goal was the sixth of the year for Richardson.
The Cowgirls will be the No. 2 seed at next week's Big 12 Soccer Championship in San Antonio. OSU will open tourney play Wednesday at 8 p.m. against Texas Tech.
