Cowgirls Roll on Day One of ITA Regionals

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Oklahoma State women's tennis team rolled to a 5-1 record in singles play on the first day of the 2010 USTA/ITA Central Regional Championships at Arkansas Thursday, as three Cowgirls advanced through two rounds of qualifying play to earn a spot in Friday's main draw bracket.
Sophomore Leyla Simmons was a perfect 2-0 on the day, defeating WIU's Amy Unzicker in straight sets before outlasting ORU's Iryna Khatsko in a third set tiebreaker to move on to the main draw.
Senior Sarah Meghoufel and sophomore Malika Rose enjoyed byes in the first round, as both girls made the most of their opportunities. Meghoufel dominated her second round opponent, winning, 6-0, 6-0, over MU's Annemijn Koenen, while Rose knocked off SLU's Casey Miller in a tiebreaker, 6-1, 4-6, 10-4.
With their wins, Simmons, Meghoufel and Rose now join Sasha Belova, Nataliya Shatkovskaya, Kanyapat Narattana and C.C. Sardinha in the singles main draw, giving OSU seven athletes in the main draw of the event.
Freshman Allison Burckhartt also earned a first-round win in Thursday's qualifying bracket, defeating DU's Amanda Aragon, 3-6, 6-4, 10-8, but fell short of the main draw as she lost to NU's Jennifer Holmberg in the second round.
Oklahoma State continues play in the 2010 USTA/ITA Regional Championships Friday as the singles and doubles main draws get underway.
