Cowgirls Advance at WSU Fall Classic

WICHITA, Kan. – Several members of the Oklahoma State women's tennis team began their first competition of the 2009-10 season Friday at the WSU Fall Classic, where the Cowgirls won five of their eight matches on the first day of the tournament.
“Everyone played really well today,” coach Chris Young said. “It was a great day for all the girls and started things well for how we want this year to go and the direction we want to take the program.”
The day started with the doubles competition, where Cowgirls Alisa Buslaieva and Iryna Khatsko advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Arkansas State's Maria Alemán and Tina Ojdanic, 8-1, in the round of 16. Alexandra Cristello and Leyla Simmons also competed in the round, dropping their match against Oklahoma's Brittany Parks and Teona Tsertvadze, 8-5.
Buslaieva and Khatsko were eliminated in the doubles quarterfinal round, but teammates Sasha Belova and Nataliya Shatkovskaya moved on to the semifinals after beating Arkansas State's Jenny Herring and Ronè van Wyk, 8-3.
The Cowgirls dominated in singles play, where Belova, Shatkovskaya and Khatsko cruised through the round of 16 by knocking off Wichita State's Lenore Lazaroiu, Arkansas' Claudine Paulson and Arkansas State's Herring, respectively, in Flight A.
Cristello also competed in singles play, falling to Oklahoma's Teona Tsertsvadze.
Oklahoma State continues its competition at the WSU Fall Classic Saturday, with play beginning at 9 a.m.
