March 30, 2009 | Cowboy Tennis
TULSA, Okla. -- Playing for the third time in four days, the Oklahoma State men's tennis team snapped a four-match losing streak with a 4-2 win over Louisville on Monday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
The Cowboys (8-5, 0-2 Big 12) continued their hot play in doubles, picking up the point to start the match. The doubles was highlighted by the 19th-ranked duo of Nedovyesov and Byrnes 8-5 win at the hands of Austen Childs and Viktor Maksumcuk.
Aleksey Bessonov and Mikhail Trukshanin won the deciding match at No. 3 doubles. They downed Alejandro Calligari and Tim Barnoud 8-4.
"We continued to play well in doubles," OSU coach James Wadley said. "Bessonov and Trukshanin were the last match on the court and they were able to come through for us."
OSU's second-ranked Oleksandr Nedovyesov kept to his winning ways at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Maksimcuk. Nedovyesov, an Alushta, Ukraine native, extended his match winning streak to ten. His quick win extended the Cowboy lead to 2-0.
Following Nedovyesov's win, Igor Sobolta picked up a straight-set win to push the Cowboy lead to 3-0. He downed Louisville's Robert Hall 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
The No. 19 Cardinals (16-5) got on the board with Austen Childs' 6-2, 6-2 win over Nathan Byrnes.
OSU appeared to have the match in control at No. 5 singles after Anton Bobytskyi opened with a 6-0 win in the first set and he jumped out to a quick lead in the second set. However, Louisville's Andrew Carter came back to force the deciding third set. Bobytskyi got out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth before coasting to 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 win to clinch the match for Oklahoma State.
"In a match we needed, Bobytskyi came through for us," Wadley said. "I was happy to see Anton play well. He got focused in the third set after losing the second."
Louisville picked up its second point with a 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 win for Calligari over Bessonov after the Cowboys had clinched the match.
"After barely losing to the 14th and 10th ranked teams, we need a win today," Wadley said. "We showed a lot of toughness to come back after losing a heartbreaker yesterday."
The Cowboys will return to action Friday when they travel to Dallas to take on Southern Methodist.
